Rethinking SaaS Metrics for AI: Emerging Metrics for Next-Era Companies
Traditional SaaS metrics like ARR, DAU/MAU, and LTV/CAC are becoming unreliable for AI-native companies due to shifts in product usage patterns, monetization models, and margin profiles. The article proposes seven alternative metrics (token consumption, gross profit per token, AI quality, work completed, burn multiple, ARR per headcount, and first year value) that better reflect the operational and financial health of AI-native businesses. Existing SaaS metrics retain relevance for subscription-based businesses with high retention and healthy margins, but new frameworks are urgently needed to properly evaluate next-generation AI companies.
